Become a Fashion Designer
You know you're destined to be a fashion designer if: a) spent most of his childhood making dresses for her Barbie dolls instead of playing with friends, b) read fashion magazines instead of books on the school, c) published a boutique in the basement at the age of 10. In other words, if you want to be the next Yves Saint Laurent, it helps to be completely and utterly obsessed with fashion.
However, there are many aspects of the profession. Working as a fashion designer may well mean supervising a design team at a sportswear company as the production of a label with your name. Although the former career may not seem as glamorous as it certainly makes your life less stressful. To create your own label takes a long time, dedication and work hard. Not to mention living just above the poverty line for several years.
Choose a strategy
There are so many ways to choose a career in fashion, as there are styles of design. Ralph Lauren Polo empire was founded on a small tie collection that he sold to Bloomingdales. Helmut Lang decided to open his own clothing store when he could not find a shirt that he liked. Michael Kors built a network of customers by selling clothes in a fashion boutique in New York City. However, most people find the best basis for a design career is to get a bachelor of fine arts at a prestigious fashion school. Besides teaching the boat, a good school will also add credibility to your CV. "We live in a society trade name, and have the name of a good school behind you really help, "says Carol Mongo, Director of the Department of Fashion at Parsons School of Design in Paris.
Applying to a school
There is a large number of universities that have programs in fashion, but only a handful has the kind of reputation that can really push your career. It is difficult to get into these schools since competition is high, and tend to be very selective. It is implemented by sending a portfolio of drawings of their designs. "There can be taught to be creative – You must bring their creativity to us and we will lead you on the way, "says Carol Mongo. She encourages students to gain experience before applying sewing.'s drawing is also an important skill of a designer – is the way to communicate their ideas. In order to create an impressive portfolio is a good idea to have some experience in drawing, taking art classes will help you understand the form and proportion. But you do not have to be an expert drawer to get accepted to a school. "The essential quality important that we seek in our students is that they are truly passionate and exuberant fashion, "says Mongo." If you have wonderful ideas but can not draw, there are ways to get around it. For example, you can put your designs on a mannequin and take pictures of it. "
What school will to do for you
Most fashion programs are three to four long years. During that time you will take classes in visual arts and design drawing, composition and color. You will also learn pattern making, draping and cutting techniques. One of the most important advantages of design schools is that they work very closely with industry. Parsons, for example, have "critical design projects" where successful designers like Donna Karan and Michael Kors work directly with students who graduate. Ambitious students also have the opportunity to win major awards and grants, enabling them to have a lot of attention, and financial support. A very important event is the fashion show at the end of last semester, when graduating students show their collections. Many important people fashion industry attend these shows to explore new talents. It is also an opportunity to be truly outrageous and attention by the media. Hussein Chalayan, for example, became instantly infamous when he showed rotting clothes that he had buried in his backyard for his graduate program at Saint Martins.
Alternative routes
"Let's be realistic," says Carol Mongo at Parsons, "School's not for everyone. If you are looking to get a job in the fashion industry – not a career as a designer – you may not need to go to school. "If you want to work as a seamstress or designer fashion, the best is probably to apply for an internship at a fashion house and the way they work. However, there are many examples of famous designers who started as interns without formal training. For example, the brightest new star of Dior designer Hedi Slimane clothing for men, had a degree in journalism when he began to work with men of Joseph Levy designer clothes. Balenciaga Nicolas Ghesquière is another brilliant example of a successful designer who learned the practical work as assistant to Jean-Paul Gaultier. In general, to apply for an internship by submitting a portfolio to a fashion house that is interested but is a good idea to call with Prior to see exactly what they need. It is also important to note that competition is fierce, and unless you have personal relationships, it is very difficult to get an internship uneducated.
There are designers such as Luella Bartley, who started his own company after working as a stylist for several years, building and a network of industry as well as a sense of good marketing.
Understanding the business
Unfortunately, not enough for a designer to be creative, you also have to have a business sense. As fashion becomes more and more business driven, it is important to be aware of the business climate and understanding of the mechanics behind it. For religiously reading trade papers such as "Women's Wear Daily" will get a lot valuable information. If you want to run your own business, you must be very organized and learn at least the basics of the economy. A lot of fashion schools are currently increasing business classes in their curriculum. "Our students have to be smart enough to know how to negotiate a contract, or choose a business partner, "says Carol Mongo. It is perhaps telling that many of the designers who are really successful today, like Calvin Klein or Tom Ford, are involved in all aspects of the business – from licensing strategies to ad campaigns for clothing design into reality.
